No Settling for Second for Donley

After picking up his first win of the 2007 season a few weeks back, Jerame Donley and his family’s Donley Motorsports team headed back to Motor Mile Speedway this past Saturday for a set of 75-lap races. Though the outcome wasn’t what the team hoped for, Donley battled for the lead late in race number one and showed he wasn’t going to settle for second.

With a fast car heading into qualifying, Jerame hoped to put his team up front for both of the 75-lap races. Unfortunately Jerame slipped on his first qualifying lap, slowing him down and relegating him to a 3rd place starting position in race one and a 10th place starting position in race number two.

From the start Jerame moved into the second place and began to keep pace with race leader and pole sitter Phillip Morris. Several restarts later Jerame started to battle for the top spot, getting the nose of his #5 LJM Machine Grand Prix underneath Morris. Morris battled back, closing the door as Jerame made each attempt to get by. With just nine laps remaining, Jerame made a great run to the inside of Morris, but the 2006 NASCAR National Champion cut down on Jerame as he tried to complete the pass through turns three and four. The two leaders went spinning and sent Jason Mitcham to victory lane for the first time in 2007.

“I had got the nose under him (Phillip Morris) several times, only to get the door closed. I finally got a good jump and was clearly side-by-side and he cut down on me again, spinning us both…I guess he didn’t want to settle for second and I wasn’t going to settle for finishing second [with] as good as the car was running,” commented an obviously upset Donley after the race. “I’m just glad to see Jason Mitcham pick up the win if we couldn’t. We’ll come back in two weeks and hopefully things will end up differently,” continued Jerame. Disappointed and upset, Jerame and the team still had to get prepared for the second Twin-75. Starting 9th Jerame tried to work his way to the front as quickly as he could, but the competitive field of cars made it difficult to work his way to the front in just 75-laps, putting Jerame 6th in the final run down of the second race.

Jerame will travel to South Boston Speedway this weekend to run a second car for owners Bob Unzcur and George Newton. Jerame and the Donley Motorsports team will return to Motor Mile Speedway on June 16th for a 150-lap feature event.
