Donley 12th in Bailey’s 300 at Martinsville
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE | October 2, 2007
MARTINSVILLE, VA – Just one week after finishing 3rd in the NASCAR WHELEN All-American Series Virginia State title chase, Jerame Donley and the Donley Motorsports team headed to the “Super Bowl” of Late Model Stock Car racing; the Bailey’s 300 at Martinsville Speedway, in Martinsville, Virginia. Jerame had hopes of making the race for the fourth straight year and for putting his family’s Donley Motorsports LJM Machine Monte Carlo up front.
The activity got underway on Friday for the much anticipated Bailey’s 300. After a shortened day of practice Jerame was able to get on the track with the #5 machine and ended up 18th quickest on the day out of the 108 Late Model Stock Cars looking to make the race. Saturday morning’s practice session saw speeds pickup, including Jerame’s; however his fastest lap of 20.561 seconds put him only 44th quickest on the final rundown.
Qualifying started at 1:00 pm and the track began to get slick with the warmer temperatures. Jerame was the 16th car to qualify out of the 108 attempting to make the race. The car was slightly loose on his qualifying attempt and he was able to lay down a lap of 20.699 seconds, only good enough for the 42nd quickest time. The qualifying lap put Jerame 5th in the 3rd heat race where he would have to race into the main event. Jerame kept a good pace, running fifth for the first portion of the heat race until the leader was black flagged for jumping the start, advancing him to the 4th position. With a handful of laps remaining Jerame worked his way by Nathan Butke for the 3rd place as the checkered flag flew. The 3rd place run in the heat race put Jerame 33rd on the starting grid for the 42 car field.
The 200-lap feature event got underway with Jerame starting in the 33rd position. By lap 29 Jerame had worked his way into the 24th position. As the laps ticked away he continued to move through the field and by the halfway break he was running 14th. At the break the team put new tires on the car and made a few small adjustments to the car in preparation for the second half of the race. By lap 137 Jerame had made his way to the 12th position and he continued to keep pace with the leaders, moving into 11th position by lap 177. Shortly after moving into 11th a fast approaching Frank Deiny, Jr. slipped Jerame back to the 12th position where he crossed the stripe to bring home a 12th place finish in the Bailey’s 300.
"I had the best car that I have ever had at Martinsville, but at the same time, the other drivers' equipment also improved. Track position was important, but just to be in the race is a huge accomplishment in itself [for this team and I]. Thanks to my crew for all their hard work and determination. Also thanks to Brent Weaver from East Coast Wings for coming on board as a primary sponsor for the Bailey's 300. We hope to keep our momentum going for the other big races in the coming months." Jerame and the Donley Motorsports team will be back in action on October 27th for the SOBO 300 at South Boston Speedway.
